Australia

"Actinotus helianthi", commonly known as the flannel flower, was one of the species of flora recorded and collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander when they arrived in Australia with Captain Cook in 1770. Flannel flowers once grew prolifically along the coast of New South Wales and southern Queensland.   Development of the colony involved clearing native vegetation, quarrying sandstone for building projects and mining accessible coal deposits to fuel growth. This prolific plant was largely eradicated. However, Spring time is a reminder of their resilience of adaptability, in bushland reserves they bust into flower among rocky outcrops and poor sandy soils.
